This is my first blog after being moved to NY. Its been a harsh welcome for me to NY since i moved here in one of the coldest winters in past 20 yrs.

Me being from India and lived in Singapore and California had never seen cold in my life, so it is really tough for me to bear this cold. Its 12 F today (-10 C) :-(.

If its just cold its okai...its cold and windy, it just goes p your head. My head pains everyday. I wear 'n' layers of cloths.

there are so many things to carry with you
1. Jacket
2. Subway Ticket,
3. Chapstic
4. Subway Ticket
5. Gloves
6. Hat
7. Muflar

i just keep checking on them, so that i don't forget any of them anywhere because life without any of these things will suck bigtime.

People are not as bad as they say. they are helpful and do pass a smile on occasion. Girls are amazingly beautiful. Subways are as DITRY as the characters of those amazing loking girls lol!! Singapore MRT is so much more cleaner. I miss singapore for hte good food and the cleaniless.

Traffic is bad, people do not follow rules, Insurance is soo high, you never get parking. All the cars look old and dirty... people do not value their cars (so it seems).

Jackson Haights (Little India) is the dirtiest of all the places in NY (amongst the places i have seen). But you get everything there. So every desi has to go there.

Times Square is happeneing even in this dirty cold, i am wondering how its going to be in summer, they say the crowd increases five folds in summer. :-( jsut to reach office i will have to dodge 5000 visitors with their handycams looking up.

All n all i have still not figured out the city much and still am wondering if I have missd somehting,or something will happen that will make me like hte city. May be its the summer i am waiting for.

Today we had a last party at our office, people were dancing and having soo much fun, like there is no tomorrow. Well there isn't any, atleast in this company, cuz we are closing down on 31st.

Company will look like a ghost town from now on, cuz most of the people have already left, or are on vacation starting from monday.

One month back the whole picture was so fade, no one knew what lies in the future, who will be where donig what, but now its getting much clearer and in most cases for good.

People have moved to many locations, in various companies and we have made few yahoo groups to keep in touch. Feels like we have representation in many comapnies now.

Technology is making a big difference in keeping people in touch and sharing the resuorces. Hail Internet.

I hope people who have jobs will try and get some of the other talented people in their company.

Once again as they say, whatever happens, Happens for good. Lets see, I shall come back to this comment 6 months down.

for those of you related to Web Services Interop issues, i just wanted to mention

-C# doesn't work with anything but Soap Arrays, if you plan to use minOccur, maxOccur forget about interop

-If your web service return an object holding an array inside it, it will not work with C#, its too dumb to understand an empty array with an Object

Everyone in my office is being laid off , the company is shutting down on dec 31st.

I see a lot of people with sad faces everyday, there is frustration, uncertainity, fear and for some H1B people, its an ultimatum to find a job within 30 days or go back to their own country.

Most of them have no idea what they will be doing after 31st. New yr with new challange.

few thaings that i have heard are-

"i'll go on extended vacation"
"i'll move to east coast, there seems to be more jobs there"
"i'll sit at home and ask my husband to feed me"
"i am planning on having a baby, since i think its going to be a while before i get another job"
"India isn't such a bad place after all, i should get a job easily in india."
"government pays 1300$ per month for 6 months, i am sure by then i will have something in my hands"
"i'll go to places where i couldn't go due to less vacations, now that i have an open ended vacation, let me fulfill that dream."
"Perfect time to get back to studies"

Company informed us about this closure 6 months in advance, It was in a way good and bad.

Good because many people while at work were looking around for job and some were lucky to find one.

Bad because it was like dying slowly, instead of saying Hi in the morning people will ask "Kuch Mila Kya?" (any job news) just to hear the same old sad NO.

Most of the people have left. Remaming 30% of us have just decided to celebrate the last few days, parties, games lunches. Making yahooo groups, taking pictures stuff like that. But deep inside everyone is SAD. It sucks to be one of us right now.

GOOOOOGLE THREAT

I fear google is another Microsoft in the making, There is absolutely no compitition, they have the biggest database of sites which is getting bigger everyday.

To make a company to compete with Google will not be an easy task, just like microsoft. They might start chargnig for easch search. Even if they charge 1 cent per search they will be HUGE within no time.

check out Google lab and FROOGLE, i mean as a company they are doing really good and the products are nice and user friendly. BUT i just don't like them to be the only player in the search engine market.

BTW, bloggin is really messing up google's search algorithm.

How google works is it weighs a web page depending on how many other web pagers have a link to the web page being evaluated.

So with weblogs, since there are so many circular links from each site, its messing up the algo. So if blogs become a huge success they will have to change their such a successful algo for searching.

I know i have not been posting lately, but i was in the midst of a huge career problem, so first things first.

Also, what I think is, to be a good blogger one needs to make openion about things one observes and reads, I am not particularly good at that. since i believe that i might not be able to think from all the angles and i might miss out on some crutial view...

but then i should not think so hard, its just a blog

I was reading this blog by these two indian girls in Sunnyvale,
Dancing with Dogs. Good stuff.

The top comment was regarding these manufacturers who use the images of Hindu Gods on the various products, and how they would not write ALLAH on the same things may be due to the scare.

According to me, if we care about our feelings about Hinduism, we should make sure that they have something to worry about before they use the images.

I am not sure how to do it and I do not support what Muslim Extremists have done in the name of religion. There must be a way.

For all you know, they might not even know that it’s an image of Hindu god. They might think its just a good-looking design.
So finally i have decided to move to NY, new year in new york. The work seems good, the future prospects look good and I HAVE NO OTHER OPTION.

I hope I can take 'The City' and its cold.
